It wasn't until the day after that, flicking through Emil Ruder's Typographie: A Manual of Design, that I found a similar thing that Matisse had done with the reduction of letters to their counters. Considering my grid and structure for my 'What is design for print' ISSUU manual is an absolute necessity. It's one of the primary ways we, as a society, pass on information to others. Ruder's methodology of typographic design and education was presented in his 1967 book, Typography: A Manual of Design. I am featuring on this site frequent typographic designs, but if you only look at inspiration without actually learning about the elements of typography, how this type of design should be used and where, you might just be an amateur designer who tries his best and that is all. Changes in typography can only happen, he argues, if practitioners take part in education as well as design.
